Art by Abstract Contemporary Oklahoma Equine Artist Jonelle T. McCoy

© "Golden Juan"
Yesterday was a trying day with an over and over repeat of chasing off neighbors loose horses from our roadside fence line where our horses could interact with them, and not on friendly terms. Lots of striking out, squealing, kicking, nipping- not a good scene. After unsuccessfully keeping them away time after time, trying to catch and corral ours until the loose ones were put up properly wasn't easy, there were some wild eyed horses all wound up over this.
All's quiet now, I just hope we don't see those loose horses again. But seeing the riled up expressions in the horses eyes made me think of this small acrylic- one I called "Golden Juan". It is for sale.

I recently participated in a fund raising auction for ex-race track horses that have been rescued or re-homed to find a new career after racing. It was held locally at Remington Park racetrack in OKC, and after some thought, I decided I wanted to be a part of it. This painting, a popular pose I revisit often, was my contribution. I will be sure to paint more of these, I just love that vertical headset with cascading forelocks.

© "My Many Roses"
A very dear and long time friend commissioned me to do a family portrait for her mothers birthday, but with a twist. I was to paint her mother, her daughters and her grandchildren all represented as horses. And on the more realistic side, not my usual approach, no stylized lines. It took me a long time to complete since I gave it a little attention each day, but finally came to completion. Her mothers middle name is Rose, and she loves roses, so I added wild roses as the backdrop. Each horse has the coloring of the person- blonds, brunette, auburn and eye color of each family member too. I saw a photo of her after she'd unwrapped it, and knew by the joy on her face I'd done a perfect job- a unique gift given with deep love, and done in a way to please a mothers heart.

"A Soldier's H'art"
Ever so often I feel like having a bit of fun by painting my horses on heart shaped flat canvases. They are only 5 1/2" wide/tall, and though tiny, some have a lot of depth of character. This one in particular came out very strong, and I felt he was a brave horse, a warrior, a hard worker, loyal and had the soul of a soldier. Since they all have the word twist I love to do as part of the title- H'art - this one is called "A Soldier's H'art" This is one I would have been just fine with it not selling, but that didn't last- he's gone to his new appreciative home.

As an owner of a gaited horse breed, the paso fino, I am used to the rhythmic sound that my horses feet make when ridden, they have perfect cadence and the sound is sweet music to my ears, and the ride to my comfort. I love to use words in unconventional ways as part of the appeal of my paintings, and this solo show is no different since you would think of a music name as rhythm and blues, my show is called "Rhythm and Hooves". This set combines a mix of music and music/dance themes portrayed by my painted horse creations. Pictured is "Duet" 20x16 gallery wrap acrylic. If you're in the Shawnee, Oklahoma area for First Friday September 5th when the show opens, be sure to stop in at the Sweet Earth Studio starting at 5PM and let the melody of hoof beats stir your soul!
